VIRGINIA AND FREUD
Sigmund Freud was born on 6 May 1856 whereas Virginia Woolf was born almost a quater of a century later in 1882. So basically Freud was 26 years older than her. He was a father of psychoanalysis.
FREUD'S IMPACT ON LITERATURE
There is a great impact of Freud’s theories on twentieth century literature. One can hardly find any area of literature which Freudian’s theory have left untouched. It can be said that because of Freud’s theories only, one can understand and appreciate the difficult poems, novels and plays than to write new ones. People can understand the complex play of Hamlet far better because of Freud’s psychoanalytical theories.
VIRGINIA'S PROBLEM WITH FREUD
So if everything is ok then why Virginia has problem with Freud? The problem lies with the thinking of Freud towards female society. He was gender bias. He always believed that women has no mind, she is God's second mistake. She is meant only for rearing children and doing household activities. He never gave respect to women. In fact He was such a partial man of his time, that he does not want his wife to be liberal and the one who interfere in his husband’s work, although he got whatever he thought in context of the ideal image of his wife. His wife Martha Freud, was no exception to this rule. She never showed a single interest in his husband’s professional life, she perfectly ran the household responsibilities, makes meal, rearing six children, and always tried to make her husband’s wife as easy as possible.
WHY FREUD THINKS LIKE THIS ?
There were reasons to this masculine bias, discriminating and partial mind set of Freud. When he was born in the year 1856, the house was full of sisters and Freud was the one who used to rule them being a single male candidate in the whole family. Freud’s mother gave birth to five daughters and each born almost in every alternate year. He was always surrounded by his five sisters.
Freud was always given special treatment in comparison to their five sisters. There was an incident with a piano which represents Freud favoured position in his house when Anna along with Freud’s other sisters were enjoying music. She was enjoying playing piano but mean while Freud was getting disturbed and because of that everything was wind up. This somewhere shows that, in that house the importance were majorly given to Freud than his sisters because of gender discrimination.
Now, Virginia being a feminist from her heart n soul was not at all entertaining his misbelives towards women, consequently started protesting his thoughts because somewhere she got distracted towards these misconception of his ill believe.
